How to Dress Vintage - Your Easy Peasy DIY Guide
We love to encourage down right extravagant vintage dress codes for our events, simply because it's fun. But there's no exclusivity here - whether it's full on moth ball vintage, a lovely re-pro skirt or a belt over your favourite dress, we believe you should enjoy our events without the worry of fitting in or having to be ultimately authentic. So relax, have a read and come along to our vintage events your way!
First up, lets get one thing straight... vintage doesn't have to be expensive! Strictly, 'vintage' refers to clothes made more than 20 years ago, but really you can mix and match old and new with lovely reproduction pieces for the perfect look. Firstly try mums, aunties and granny's closets, you'll be surprised what you can find. Then try charity shops, eBay and your local vintage shop (for thrifty options try out of town stores, we love The Old Wardrobe in Rugby) or if you must go new see our high street guide below for fabulous vintage inspired looks.
Reinvent your existing wardrobe to get a vintage feel. First step in achieving this is to pick your era and focus on the shapes that suit you. Here's a quick guide:
1920s/30s
Drop waist dresses, floating silks and little structure, cloche hats, box coats, t-bar shoes.
How to achieve it: Silk camisoles with feathers pinned on as a brooch with a hipster silk skirt, pearls and dark reds lips, or place a piece of stretch sequined material at the hips of a free flowing dress to create a drop waist look.
1940s
High waist bands, wide trousers, tailoring, shoulder pads, tea dresses, gypsy tops, circle skirts, 'ditsy' patterns
How to achieve it: Turn one of your summer dresses '40s by safety pinning shoulder pans into it, and add an elasticated belt onto the waist.
1950s
Wiggle form fitting shapes or wide swing skirts, sweetheart necklines, cardigans, off the shoulder tops, peep toe shoes, wedges.
How to achieve it: Create your own rock and roll skirt with tulle from your local haberdashery, safety pinning a few layers inside. Alternatively take a pencil skirt, wear it high on the waist and pair with a tight fitting shirt, tucked in with a wide elasticated belt over the waist band of the skirt.

Before we start on all things frock and turns ups lets start with the grass roots and talk a little about the music... The term rockabilly developed from the combination of hillbilly or country music and rock and roll, a new type of r 'n' r that, that like all new genres spouted a following through fashion, vehicles and film, mostly associated with the rebellious hit makers of the mid-'50s, hot rods, hep chicks and means boys. Rock and roll is perhaps a little more mainstream, a little less controversial and altogether softer. At LeKeux Events we went one step further and coined the phrase Sugabilly to describe our new generation of vintage enthusiast, genre mixing vixens who like to dabble on both sides of the turn table.
Here's our favourite picks from reproduction and vintage clothing online to help you achieve each look...
